Three heroes, three voices: how Morricone scored The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The critic
Morricone and Leone worked out the main themes of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly before the cameras rolled, and the score reads like a fourth lead rather than accompaniment. One two-note coyote call is passed between a flute, an ocarina-type instrument and human voices, one for each of the three men.
Here is how the trick works, who played it, and how to hear the layers for yourself. Take the short quiz first; the answers are in the score.
