Ghost in the Cell
The critic
(4 out of 5)★★★★☆
A prison horror from Indonesia that is also a comedy, a political fable and, at times, a dance number. Joko Anwar's Ghost in the Cell is gory, warm-hearted and unusually sure of its tone, and most critics who have seen it call it his best work.
The pacing sags in the first half and the plotting gets contrived, but the nerve and the heart carry it. If you can stomach the gore and the swerves, it is a late-night crowd-pleaser.
