Strings only: how Bernard Herrmann scored Psycho

The critic

Bernard Herrmann scored Psycho for strings alone, a "black and white" sound, and played them muted almost throughout. The exception is the shower cue, which Hitchcock had wanted to leave silent.

This explainer covers why mutes make the main titles feel held back, how the famous cue stacks its parts, and what to listen for on headphones. Spoilers for the shower scene sit behind a clear warning.
